Pam Heil of Girly Bits | Indie Expo Canada Exclusive Swatches & Interview
-What's your name, brand name & what sort of products will you be bringing to Indie Expo Canada?
My name is Pam Heil, my brand is Girly Bits Cosmetics, and I will have a selection of nail polishes and stamping polishes, top coats, base coats, acetone additives, cuticle oils and balms.

-Is this your first time participating in Indie Expo Canada?
Third year running! 😊

-Will you be attending in person?
In the flesh! I may only have one eye open, but I will be there!

-Why'd you pick the name you did for your brand?
The brand name came from the name of my nail blog. When I was trying to come up with a name for my blog, I knew I wanted it to be a blog about several things such as polish and nail art, makeup, hair, and little bits of other girlie things.

-What other names did you have in mind?
Oh gosh it’s been so long now I don’t remember exactly, but I had a list of all kinds of glittery sparkly and feminine words. Ultimately, I decided on Girly Bits since it was the name of my blog, and also didn’t pigeonhole me in to just nail polish. Plus, it was just a little cheeky, like me.

-What's your favourite discontinued product as well as your favourite available product from your brand?
I have too many discontinued products to choose just one, but my favourite recently released polish is Lunar Ice.

-What led you to creating your own products? Was it to have your own brand or to just create things for yourself?
I have always been an avid nail polish collector, and when I started looking into making my own nail polishes it was more just for myself, to make the polishes I could see in my head but not find in stores, and as a creative outlet. After accumulating a MASSIVE amount of supplies and getting a good reaction to the polishes I was creating, I realized that it could be a viable business.

-How long have you been in this business? Is it a side hustle or full-time job for you?
Girly Bits is in year 8 of business. It is my full-time job.

-What other interests/hobbies do you enjoy?
I don’t have much time for other hobbies anymore, but I enjoy music and going to concerts, cooking, reading, spending time with our two new grandchildren, and relaxing at our cottage on Pelee Island.

-What's one product that'll be at the show that you would recommend to anyone/everyone? & Why did you choose that product?
We will have an early release of the September colour of the month duo there!

-Being in this sort of business must be extremely competitive, what are some dilemmas you've faced?
In terms of the business being competitive, I have learned to just stay focussed on what I am doing and not worry about what everyone else is doing. I built my business on what I felt was right for me and for my customers. Not what other brands felt was right for their brand.  Staying true to yourself, but ahead of the game is a tough balance, but honestly if you spend all of your energy worrying about everyone else, then you will have no energy left to do what you do best.

-What keeps you doing what you do everyday?
Caffeine. And Timbits.

-What's your favourite part about attending events, compared to online sales?
My favourite part of all events is seeing the pure joy on the faces of the attendees. For real. It makes it all worth it. It’s like watching your kids open presents.

-Do you have any advice you'd like to give others in your line of business?
Stay focused. Be open minded. Don’t take things personally. Get your sleep. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

-Where do you want your business to be in two years?
I like where I am right now, so right here. 😊

-Lastly, please tell me one thing you'd like fans of Indie Expo Canada to know?
It’s the best little indie event in Canada!
