Cuter Cuticles | Indie Expo Canada Exclusive Swatches & Interview

Press Samples

Hey loves, today I'll be sharing the interview I did with Sammy from Cuter Cuticles. She is the creator of my holy grail cuticle oil in the scent Cotton Candy or Cider Donuts. Super excited to be sharing photos of her Indie Expo Canada exclusives as well as the fantastic interview.

Cuter Cuticles - Sammy | Indie Expo Canada Exclusive Swatches & Interview
-What's your name, brand name & what sort of products will you be bringing to Indie Expo Canada?
My name is Sammy and my brand is Cuter Cuticles.  I’ll be bringing fan favourites and best sellers to Indie Expo, as well as leftovers from the GLADvents and PPU.  There will also be some of the Cuter Cuticles Tumblers and of course the famous “Sniffing Station” will be making an appearance.

-Is this your first time participating in Indie Expo Canada?
Nope!  This is my third year.

-Will you be attending in person?
You betcha.  It’s the main reason I keep doing the Expo – to meet so many Cuties in person.

-Why'd you pick the name you did for your brand?
My husband and I were joking around and using alliteration to come up with silly names and when this one came out, it just stuck.  It suits my personality and my Cute branding.

-What other names did you have in mind?
We actually considered things like “Fantastic Philanges”.  Oh man, I don’t remember them any more – it’s been 4 or 5 years now.

-What's your favourite discontinued product as well as your favourite available product from your brand?
My favourite discontinued product were the little poo emoji rings that I hand-made for a while.  That was super fun.  Loved seeing them in people’s photos.
My favourite current product is the new Cutie Care Cream, because I’ve been using it non-stop.

-What led you to creating your own products? Was it to have your own brand or to just create things for yourself?
I was deep into nail art and I was online looking for a good cuticle oil and while there were crowd favourites (Looking at you Bliss Kiss), there weren’t a lot of scent choices that I was interested in.  So I researched and discovered that I could make my own, and that I could SCENT my own and started making it.  My first few rounds were just funny smelling things for me and my friends – and when we were posting them online, someone said “Birthday Cake cuticle oil?!? I would pay for that!” and voila, a brand was born.

-How long have you been in this business? Is it a side hustle or full time job for you?
I’m terrible at this – and even get my own age wrong – but I think this is Cuter Cuticles….uh…fifth year in business?  Fourth or Fifth.  Maybe sixth? Haha.  I have no clue.  As indie brands go, I guess I’ve been around a while now.

This is my side hustle.  I have a very demanding day job.  I did consider making it my full time hustle at one point, and may still do so in the future, but for now I’m too chicken to give up my day job, where I’ve worked for 21 years.  I’m a Project Manager, in case that’s the next question – which might explain why I have to over-plan and analyse everything.  Maybe that’s why I’ve remained successful through some bumps – the ability to analyze the business side and change things up as needed.  Thanks, day job!

It does sometimes get difficult to run both.  This year, for instance, I’ve had two very involved projects at work that have pulled me away from Cuter Cuticles.  I’m hoping that will be over soon though and I can get back to really being creative with my baby, Cuter Cuticles.

-What other interests/hobbies do you enjoy?
Uh, I like tattoos …and travelling.  Mr. Sammy and I travel several times a year.  My current favourite vacations have been Iceland and Switzerland, but I’m good to lay on a beach in Mexico as well.

-What's one product that'll be at the show that you would recommend to anyone/everyone? & Why did you chose that product?
The new Cutie Care Cream!  I know that Barrier Butter, while a crowd favourite for good reason, is not for everyone.  It’s thick and greasy (by design) and that can sometimes be inconvenient.  But the new Cutie Care Cream is not!  It soaks in and is more like a thicker hand cream but has all the same amazing benefits you expect form a Cuter Cuticles’ product.

-Being in this sort of business must be extremely competitive, what are some dilemmas you've faced?
I’m very conscious of not copying other makers, which can sometimes be very difficult when the product are similar.  I’ve shelved products in the past for this reason.  There was also that episode where that one maker tried to trademark the word “mani bomb” so only she could use it.  Uh, she’s not in business anymore so that took care of itself.

-What keeps you doing what you do everyday?
My Cuties.  Every time I think that I need to put Cuter Cuticles down or take a break, someone posts in the fan group wondering where I’ve been or what I’m doing or whether I’m ok or that they need a particular product and it just reminds me of why I started this in the first place.  I do it for the fun and the comradery and it just so happens, it makes me money now.

-What's your favourite part about attending events, compared to online sales?
Again, the Cuties!  My people.  While it’s super weird to sometimes feel like I have “fans”, it really amazing to hug people and see the smiles in person for names you normally just see on a screen. Also, it gives me a chance to show that my personality isn’t just a front – this is who I am all the time and I want people to be comfortable with me and my brand.  I want us to feel like friends.  And Mr. Sammy LOVES all the attention he gets at Indie Expo.

-Do you have any advice you'd like to give others in your line of business?
It’s cliché – but really and truly, treat your customers right and don’t worry about what other people are doing/selling.

-Where do you want your business to be in two years?
I would like it to be just as it is today – with no scandals and a solid customer base – and you know, with a bunch of new and exciting products from my creative brain.

-Lastly, please tell me one thing you'd like fans of Indie Expo Canada to know?
Know that I appreciate every single one of you, even if you don’t buy from my table, I appreciate and value that you’ve come to support this group of business women and that we all share a common hobby.  That’s pretty fantastic.  Keep that sh*t up!

Nail Pattern Boldness Cuticle Oil has the same texture I expect from Cuter Cuticles. Too me it has the perfect texture, it's very smooth, slightly thick with richness & not sticky at all. It's an extremely high quality cuticle oil.
