How Nail Polish Keeps Me Sane / 1st Anitaween Mani

This little corner of my office may not look like a big deal to many, but some days, spending time here is what keeps me away from the deep end.

Nail Polish Desk

To many, nail polish is just another part of their beauty routine, nails are painted and hardly given a second thought.  To me, Nail Polish is my favourite hobby, an elaborate ritual that calms me and provides a sense of accomplishment.  I love to sit at my desk and look over my growing collection of Indie Polish and consider what I'd like to create.  I love setting up my work station so that everything is in its place and ready for me when I need it.  I love the attention to detail that the intricate designs require.  I especially love that my boys understand that when I sit here I am asking for some me time.

Years and years ago I was diagnosed with OCD, Depression and Anxiety, after I sought counselling to deal with losing my job.  I was surprised to be diagnosed with OCD, but when the symptoms I had were pointed out, a lot of my quirks made more sense to me.  I never felt judged for or embarrassed by these diagnoses and was happy to try all of the treatments made available to me.  I am also not at all hesitant to thank Prozac for my ongoing state of good mental health!  I do think that the organizing and focus that Nail Art requires is why I was so drawn to it.

When I first forayed into the world of Nail Art, I would sit in the living room using a small side table and lap desk set up to entertain myself while my infant son napped.  As he grew, so did my collection and skills.  Soon I had a Cupboard style desk full of goodies that I used after bedtime when the house was quiet.  Now that my son is of school age, the after bedtime routine is still intact, but I also have no qualms about informing him and my husband that I need an hour to myself by saying "mommy is going to do her nails".  That time I take for myself is so very important, just as important as the time I take to go to the gym to better my physical health, this little breather from caring for and cleaning up after my entire household is to better my mental health.

I also love sharing my creations with fellow Polish enthusiasts.  I have over 1000 followers on Instagram and have now been part of this blog for a whole year and have loved sharing my creations and at times, thoughts, opinions and experiences with all of you.  So with that said here is my first creation of the Halloween season!

This look for Anitaween (what we call Halloween/the whole month of October around here since meeting Anita), began with some Halloween plates I borrowed from Anita.  I thought to myself, why do most Halloween manis have dark/traditional spooky colours... why can't they be sparkly and colourful?   So I grabbed for a couple of cheery Girly Bits Polishes and a few bright Clear Jelly Stamper Stamping Polishes and went to work!

It was so cute, I decided to do a similar design on my right hand with a different base colour.

  2. I entirely understand what you express so well in your first paragraph! People at work are astonished that I swap out my manicure so many times each week, but it is my quiet-my-mind-down zen sanity time, figuring out what polish(es) to use and what design, if any, to add on top.

Your colorful Halloween mani is inspiring me to do the same — I love spooky nails but orange & black & deep purple gets a little old over the course of the month. Thanks for sharing your great execution of this fun look!
